On June 9, twenty Scholars were celebrated for receiving their certification or degree in early childhood education in 2026.
The Scholars, many of whom brought friends and family members, enjoyed refreshments, visiting with each other and hearing from three members of the graduating class who shared their experiences. Ashlee Epps highlighted her educational roots, following her grandmother and mother into early childhood education. There is a power of community within Scholars, a network of fellow teachers to ask questions and lean on in times of struggle. When the Scholars program was created, Ashley Thomas, Director of TrueFit Childcare, had trouble getting anyone on her staff to take part so she decided to lead by example, even though this meant attending school whilst working full-time, having a second job and raising her own children. Her example has paid off; team members are now in the Scholars program!
Despite a degree in engineering, David Jones' life turned toward child care when his mother opened four centers and he began working there. He has developed deep, lasting bonds with students, some of whom are in their adulthood. The Scholars program helped him discover his own teaching style, understand the "why" behind the work, and fuel his desire to give back to the community he serves.

Keynote Speaker Dr. Alonzo Patterson, III remarked on early childhood education as a profound calling. His passion for
early childhood education sparked early when his grandmother would take him with her to Head Start. Teachers shape the hearts and minds of the children they teach, noting that he himself is a living example of what can happen when you invest in a child. He reminded the graduates that they have the honor to shape future leaders—the very people who will build our buildings, teach our children, and heal our sick.
