The Ready to Read program is a two-pronged approach: while the teaching cohort sharpens classroom instruction, Tiarra Williams and Hertia Mims work alongside families through the Family Connection piece.

Ready to Read families have enjoyed monthly Literacy Events at Fairview Elementary and special gatherings like Bedtime at the Boonshoft and Ready to Read at Dayton Dragons — all designed to equip families with fun, FREE resources to build strong early literacy skills.

This year, the team is returning with Tips at Pickup! Each week, Tiarra and Hertia greet families at drop-off or pickup, sharing quick, playful tips grounded in the Five Early Literacy Practices: Talk, Read, Write, Sing, Play. These small, simple activities transform ordinary moments, like car rides or bedtime, into meaningful learning opportunities.

Did you know? Children who are read 1,000 books before Kindergarten are more likely to succeed on the Kindergarten Readiness Assessment and start school strong. Families are encouraged to track their reading through Dayton Metro Library’s Beanstack app, with celebrations planned when milestones are reached.
