Child choosing berries
A Passport to Kindergarten student chooses parts of the rainbow to eat.

The Passport to Kindergarten program finished its year with a celebration at Five Rivers Metroparks Wegerzyn Gardens. The event is an evening to celebrate the children, their families, the teachers and partners who have made early literacy a priority in their classrooms and homes.

This school year families have received books chosen by the partners, including, Are Trees Alive?, chosen by Five Rivers Metroparks. Like the partners before him, Doug Horvath visited the classrooms and provided the teachers with supplies to use in the classroom. He even came dressed like a tree, and taught the children songs about trees!

Throughout the program events, stamps are collected in each child’s passport, whether by attending events or by reading books at home. Stamps turn into raffle tickets and prizes are chosen. One child was so excited to win a child-sized tree costume they ran to find Mr. Doug and tell him (and wore the costume home).
